This summer has been a scorcher so far. Here in the Upstate New York region alone we have had record heat, numerous heat waves and countless days of high humidity. As runners it can be difficult to navigate these conditions. When training or time permits no matter what the weather conditions may be, we need to get out there and train. With that being said its important to fuel and hydrate your body properly to sustain your activity level in the heat. Below are some helpful hints to keep you successfully moving this summer.
Drink- Continue to drink water throughout the day. Before, after and during your run. Mix in drinks with electrolytes as well. There are also some great hydration supplements such as LMNT, Nuun and Tailwind.
Time Of Day- If at all possible try to run at cooler times of the day. We know, sometimes its hard enough to get your run in but if all possible early mornings or later evenings are best. This way the heat of the sun isnt bearing down on you along with the natural heat and humidity of the day.
Clothing- What you wear is important. Wearing lighter colors that help reflect the sun that are moisture wicking will help keep your body cool. Dont forget sunscreen!
Alter Your Run- Dont forget to listen your body and mind. Dont push yourself. If you need to take it at a slower pace, do it. If you need to shorten the time or length of your run, do it. Pushing yourself through the heat and exhaustion isnt worth it.
